The Wayland Fire Department has installed a computer in the Radio Room which is setup to display the "I Am Responding" screen at all times. Over the next week, we will be installing a 32" LCD screen that will be visible from the Apparatus Floor.
I Am responding is a web based application that Steuben County 911 has started working with. This application allows our members to notify the base and the dispatch center that they are responding to the base. After beingtoned out, our members can speed dial an 800 number on their cell phone and drop it on the passenger seat while they drive to the base. Once that is done, I Am responding uses the Caller ID of the cell phone to update the screen in our base and in the Steuben County 911 Center.
This feature helps us fill a gap that every emergency services organization that uses a page-out system (most of rural america) has...we don't know who is coming to the base until they get there. Now, we will be able to glance at a screen and know who is coming, what they are certified for and can figure out which apparatus should wait or roll based on staffing and our knowledge of member's skill sets.
